Julianna, being the girly girl that she is, has been begging for quite a while to get her hair cut. I thought her hair was fine, but she wanted it cut, and I understand wanting that pampering. Part of the reason I've been dragging my heels is that I really don't have someone to cut her hair. The woman who cuts Jacob's believes little girl's hair should be long and straight, which is fine for some people but that's not what compliments Julianna's hair.

About a year ago, a "salon" opened at the mall for little girls,
Sweet & Sassy. It's one of those places that offers haircuts, mini-manicures, mini-pedicures, facials, make-up applications, etc. for little girls. I have no problem with the haircuts, but seeing a child-sized salon full of kid-sized equipment was a little creepy. While we were there a party of four year olds came in for their pedicures. It's funny, for a special occasion I could see doing that,
maybe, for seven year olds, but it was just weird, for me, to see such little ones participating. Don't even get me started on the whole facial and make-up services. That, to me, is insane for any age child.
Still, I can definitely see the appeal of the place, especially to my girly-girl, so I decided to call them and see what they're like and what their prices are like. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that their "sassy cut" is half-price Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and that Julianna could get her hair washed, cut and sassy-styled (whatever), for $12.48. At that price, it was easy to be the fun mom and say yes.

We went on Monday when the kids didn't have school. I wish I had taken my camera, I didn't want to seem too odd, so I didn't, but this place was certainly a sight to behold. In truth, she had a lot of fun and felt like a princess through the whole thing. Who doesn't enjoy that? I'll admit I was a little taken aback when I returned from checking on Jacob, who was happily playing his DS the whole time, to see Julianna's hair being flat-ironed, but I figured once in a while it's not going to kill her hair, and she sure did enjoy everything about the experience.
At the end of the haircut there's a lolly pop, glitter cheek stars, glitter hair spray, and cotton candy fragrance for the hair. Oooh la-la indeed. Honestly, it's not 100% my thing, but as long as they run their $12.48 special, I'll be happy to accommodate her desire for pampering whenever she needs a trim.
Sadly, it wasn't my favorite haircut, I didn't think it showed her hair to it's best advantage, like this (much more expensive) haircut did. To be fair I should point out her hair never looked like this again after she slept on it.

As any woman knows however, getting our haircut is as much about the experience as the end result and it was fun to be able to offer that to her. I could see for a birthday surprise, maybe someday giving her a mini-mani and pedicure. She would certainly love it.
By the way, if you're interested, they do birthday parties...they
start at $249.00, most are in the $299.00 - $399.00 range, for 9 girls, limo extra. Sadly (surprisingly? oddly?), they book plenty.

I can totaly agree with you on the salon thing and been abit to much for kids, I think that kids should stay young as long as possible and not be worried about how their nails look and what jewelry to wear.
Oh, she is just so cute! And you know what? A little pampering never hurt anyone. Especially at that price!
The birthday party price though...holy CRUD! That is so beyond my budget I can't even wrap my head around it!
Looks great! Girls will be girls!
My girls would DIE for this! Their favorite thing to play is "Salon"
Ahk! Parties starting at $249??? I agree with you. That's crazy.
But I'm so glad your daughter enjoyed her pampering. Twelve bucks is certainly do-able.
Good grief, that would be an expensive party!
Curly or straight, she's a beautiful girl.
Super cute new do! I bet you could have brought your camera without feeling odd. Considering they do parties for 4 year olds I'm sure they are used to people snapping pictures.
Personally I think it is a little insane for little girls getting manicures and pedicures, but then I bite my nails.....so there you go. :)
She looks beautiful, and happy.
My 2 got mani/pedi kits from Santa this year. They love to have their toe nails painted like mine. Glad they are still happy with that 'cuz I just can't do $249 for a party! WOW!
Yeah. I am not into that kind of thing either. I never got my hair cut in a salon until I was in my early twenties. And I never had a manicure or pedicure until my wedding day. Now little 4 and 5 year olds have it done. CA-RAZY! Yipes. And $250 parties???? SERIOUSLY? Man.
Anyway, I just love her beautiful curly hair! What a pretty little lady! :)
What a fun mom you are! There's nothing wrong with a little pampering now and then. But I'm with you, it should be the occasional treat, not someone the child can demand and expect. My nieces are totally into all that girly-girl stuff too. Thankfully, my 2 year old isn't...yet.
Thanks for sharing!
Wow, that's ah, a little crazy!
Glad she had a good time.
The idea is kinda fun for the girly girl... but seriously I think there is already too much pressure on girls to be everything, that I'd never do it. My kids just get the mom special!
That sounds like a lot of fun!
That looks and sounds like a girly girl's dream come true. I would definitely do it at that price. Now the party...WOOOAH! That's a lot!
Ah, Sweet and Sassy. We have one here too. About two years ago, I wrote a guest post on Melissa's now-dead blog on the topic of kiddie salons/spas. That post got my invited to do the now-off air Mike and Juliette talk show.
Needless to say, I am not a fan, and I agree with you that Julianna's hair looks much better in the second set of photos. I think it's frightening that little girls are being encouraged to act and dress and have "salon-style" treatments (I'm not talking about haircuts here), as if they were mini adults. I think they send a dangerous message that happiness should be derived from the way a little girl looks on the outside and not the qualities that make her who she is on the inside. And don't even get me started on the appearance obsession I think places like that foster. That's something that seems to be inevitable for girls anyway, but why should this start when they're 4?
Okay, I am stepping off my soapbox now. :)
Julianna looks so sweet, Stacey! Glad she enjoyed herself. :)
How nice that they have those half-price days...that's my kind of price :) and it is nice to be pampered now and then but the whole facial thing - I agree - a bit over the top. She looks cute with her do hair cut!
Love the haircut! She looks adorable!!!
And birthday parties for that much? Um... holy expensive batman!
